Burpengary falls well short in run chase
A FINE all-round display from Stephen Helliwell wasn’t enough for Burpengary to win its opening match of the Community Cricket Championships season last Saturday.
Helliwell took 4/23 and then top-scored in Burpengary’s contest with Indooroopilly at the Burpengary-based James Worthington Oval, with the visiting team winning by 56 runs.
The visiting side compiled 179 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 36 overs after being invited to bat first, and then the home side could not come close to the required run rate.
Indooroopilly duo Clayton McInnes and Akashdeep Singh put on an opening partnership of 46, and then the second wicket partnership produced 47 runs before the visitors slipped from 1/93 to 6/117.
Ensuing partnerships of 22 and 36 ensured a decent total, while Burpengary’s bowlers conceded 22 runs in wides.
Indooroopilly’s bowlers were also wayward at times as they gave away 20 runs in wides, but Burpengary paid dearly for a slow start.
The openers were bogged down before Helliwell sought to change things after coming in at the fall of the first wicket. He hammered three sixes and a four in his 37 from 43 balls after Indooroopilly’s top scorer, Akashdeep Singh, had taken 58 balls for his 37.
Helliwell’s departure left Burpengary at 4/93, and soon that became 6/99 as Indooroopilly was in control.
Daniel Roiko was the pick of the bowlers with 3/19 while Daljeet Singh had 2/17.
Burpengary will be back on home soil this Saturday for its round two clash with Peninsula, which is coming off a hefty seven-wicket loss to Coorparoo.
