Caboolture falls short in Div 1 run chase
CABOOLTURE’S Div 1 cricketers suffered a rare defeat last Saturday as Gympie enjoyed a 17-run victory in the contest at One Mile Recreation Area.
The hosts batted out their 50 overs and finished on 9/185, which proved too much for the visiting team which was dismissed with 5.4 overs to spare.
There was little point speculating how different the result could have been, had Caboolture’s bowling line-up included wily left-arm slow bowler and prolific wicket-taker Preston White. He played as a specialist batter due to a niggling calf injury.
John Flew made the first breakthrough as Gympie had 13 runs on the board, before three of the top four batters set about building a defendable total.
Gympie’s captain, wicketkeeper and opening batter Trent Riddell scored a solid 46 from 84 balls while number three Brendan Mahaffey took 89 balls to score 36.
Buwaneka Ekanayake lifted the run rate as he smacked 39 runs from just 26 balls, before his departure triggered a mini collapse as Gympie stumbled from 2/112 to 5/128.
Troy Ashton and Brycen Mitchell made handy runs without taking control, and a couple of run-outs hindered Gympie’s progress.
Flew had economical figures of 1/27 from 10 overs while Cameron Trask bowled tidily in his six overs without taking a wicket. Daniel Bell, Carter Simpson and Jackson Mills captured two wickets each and were a little wayward at times.
Preston White and Thomas Rowley gave Caboolture a healthy start until an opponent with a combination of their names – Thomas White – dismissed the duo.
A fourth wicket stand of 56 seemed to put Caboolture on the right track, before the prized scalp of Glen Batticciotto for 38 spelt doom for the visiting team. Caboolture slumped from 3/127 to 8/150, with a run-out among the dismissals.
There were still plenty of overs remaining, and a 17-run partnership took Caboolture to within 19 runs of victory before the last two wickets fell for one run.
Simpson, who arrived at the fall of the fourth wicket, finished unbeaten on 20 from 53 balls as he ran out of support.
Thomas White nabbed 3/37 after finishing the match with a successful appeal for lbw, while Harrison Sippel and Jackson White had two scalps each.
Ashton had a fine all-round match as he claimed 1/20 from 10 overs following his knock of 21, although he also delivered five wides.
Run chase falters in Div 2
Caboolture put in a competitive showing against Coolum in the Div 2 fixture at Caboolture, only for the visitors to win by 67 runs.
Coolum was dismissed for 167 in 39.5 overs, before Caboolture succumbed in 34.5 overs.
Jack Williams claimed two early wickets for Caboolture, before Coolum opener Dean Kenny led a recovery.
Kenny top-scored with 45 before he was run out, and the second top score was 29 from Max Smith at number seven.
Zac Clark and Cody Irvin claimed three wickets each for Caboolture while Williams was the tidiest bowler as his eight overs yielded just 23 runs.
Caboolture lost its first wicket with 10 runs on the board before Jackson Simpson gave the hosts a chance of victory. Caboolture skipper Clayton Simpson departed just after the team’s 50 was raised, and then the score progressed to 2/80 before a dramatic collapse unfolded.
Jackson Simpson’s dismissal for 42 triggered the sharp decline as seven wickets fell for just 20 runs, with nine-out being all out as Nicholas Haffenden retired.
Ryan Briggs and Tim Hynes nabbed three victims each for the victors while opening bowler Ricky Remington conceded just nine runs in his five overs, having also taken the first wicket.
Caboolture reaches target in Div 3
The home side defeated Caloundra by four wickets in the Div 3 contest at Caboolture Sports Cricket Club, as Reece Clark starred with bat and ball.
It was only the second time this season that Caboolture’s Div 3 cricketers tasted victory, having beaten Nambour in the season-opening round back on October 1.
Caloundra made 8/175 in 40 overs before Caboolture secured victory halfway through the 33rd over in the run chase.
Caloundra’s openers played contrasting roles, as Marcus Bellchambers hammered seven fours and three sixes in his 55 from 38 balls while Peter Hall did not register a boundary in his sluggish 30 from 86 balls.
Following the demise of Bellchambers, the run rate dropped markedly as Brian Jones scored just three runs from 27 balls.
At number four, Brad Bailey helped move things along as he scored 46 from 63 balls. The visitors reached 2/154 but then lost five wickets for only seven runs.
Caloundra’s total would have been much less had Caboolture not sent down 24 wides.
Clark was Caboolture’s best bowler with 2/20 from eight overs. Luke Tuza and Aaron Clegg also snared two wickets each, while Lachlan Crowe and Tim Stimson took one apiece.
Caboolture’s openers put on 28 runs before Brendan Hucknall made two breakthroughs to reduce the hosts to 2/43.
The departure of opener Brendan Vassallo for 34 left the hosts 3/78, before partnerships of 40 and 38 ensured there was little to worry about. Jeremy Donahoo scored one more run than Vassallo before the number four batter was the fourth wicket to fall.
Clark dominated while Chris Dellit scored just three runs in the 38-run stand. Alexlie Rose then whacked 16 runs off just seven balls, and was stumped when seeking the winning runs.
Clark finished with 40 not out from 44 balls, including four fours.
Caloundra’s bowlers also paid for a wayward line, as they conceded 22 runs in wides.
Caboolture wins Div 6 amid mass sundries count
Caboolture recorded a four-wicket win over Cooroy-Eumundi in last Saturday’s Div 6 match at the Cooroy Sportsground.
Caboolture’s bowlers gave away 39 runs in wides and four in no-balls as Cooroy-Eumundi was dismissed for 100 in 30 overs.
Nick Sly had great figures of 5/34 but he conceded 17 runs in wides, while Raymond Maller gave away five runs in wides as he had miserly figures of 1/11 from eight overs.
Patrick Lawson’s 2/22 from eight overs included eight runs from illegal bowling, while Peter Quirk and Daniel Cornale claimed a wicket each and also sent down a number of illegitimate deliveries.
The hosts also bowled a stray line at times, as the run chase included 26 runs from wides and two from no-balls.
Caboolture was comfortably placed at 1/51 before stumbling to 4/62, and further wickets fell at 87 and 98 before victory was achieved in the 24th over.
Maller top-scored with 23 at number three while the next highest score was 12 from Cornale.
Brett Underwood took four wickets for the hosts.
Women’s Tier 1 match awarded to Coolum following rain disruption
The women’s Tier 1 match at Caboolture last Sunday was awarded to Coolum after rain cut the contest short.
The hosts made a competitive total of 2/149 in their 30 overs, and then the visitors were soundly placed at 3/101 after 18.5 overs when the match ended prematurely.
Brianna Coffin (51 not out) and Jear Cochrane (48 not out) excelled with the bat for Caboolture, before Coffin claimed a wicket with the first ball of Coolum’s innings.
Gayle Mawer claimed a wicket, as did Cochrane, before Nicola Browne (50 not out) guided Coolum into a winning position.
Browne received solid support from Paula McKie, who made 19 not out.
Glasshouse Green too strong in women’s Tier 2
Caboolture was no match for Glasshouse Green in last Sunday’s women’s Tier 2 contest at Caboolture, with the hosts making 68 in 18 overs before the visitors reached 3/70 in 13.3 overs.
Caboolture’s total was boosted immensely by 48 sundries, including 20 wides and 20 no-balls.
Adelyn Eakin raised Caboolture’s hopes when she bowled Carla Schultz with the first ball of the run chase, before the second wicket fell with 10 runs on the board.
The third wicket fell at 26, but there were no further hiccups for Glasshouse Green.
Makayla Bigalla made 24 not out while Shanea Langridge-Lawson was undefeated on 22.
Eakin nabbed 2/3 from two overs while Laura Topp claimed the other wicket.
