Construction of new Toogoolawah community gym breaks ground

CONSTRUCTION of the new Toogoolawah Community Gym adjacent to the Swimming Pool began recently.

Somerset Region Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke said: “The new facility is a great addition to the Toogoolawah area and Somerset Region. It almost triples the capacity of the current facility and provides great connectivity to the swimming pool. It provides a one-stop shop for our healthy community. I can’t wait to get in there”.

“When we first opened the existing gym in 2012, we couldn’t have imagined how successful the gym would become,” Cr Brieschke said.

“The construction of the gym follows the recent installation of the electric heating at the Toogoolawah Swimming Pool, and refurbishments of the Toogoolawah Skate Park and Toogoolawah Tennis Courts. Its also exciting to see construction start just a couple weeks before the Queensland Athletics Cross Country Champs at the Toogoolawah Golf Course, which Council has helped bring to the region.”

The Gym project is supported by the Queensland Government, which provided $820,000 to Somerset Regional Council to construct the new multi-purpose facility and install pool heating under the Active Community Infrastructure program to enable Queenslanders to participate in sport and recreation Activities”.

Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed at the beginning of 2022.

The swimming season remains scheduled to start on September 18, 2021. Care will be taken to ensure only minor disruptions to services occur during construction.

Local facility managers, Somerset Health and Fitness and Somerset Leisure will continue to operate the Toogoolawah Community and Toogoolawah Swimming Pool respectively through the upcoming 2021-22 swimming season, following the opening of the new facility.

Council’s vision is for the facility to become one single recreation complex when the next management tenders are called in mid-2022.
