LAST Friday night was a momentous occasion for the Brisbane Valley Rattlers as they recorded their first victory in senior AFL.

Following 12 losses in their maiden year in the QFA (Queensland Football Association) Division 4 Seniors South competition, the Rattlers overcame a 16-point third-quarter deficit to defeat the Beenleigh Buffaloes 9.5.59 to 8.4.52 at Guardian Gantry Hire Oval.

This came one week after the Fernvale-based club suffered its heaviest loss of the year: 30.17.197 to 0.1.1 against the top-placed Pacific Pines.

Last Friday’s battle on Beenleigh soil was sure to be keenly anticipated as both teams were chasing their first win of the year.

The visiting team scored 3.1.19 to the hosts’ 2.2.14 in the first quarter, before the visitors held a tiny 4.4.28 to 4.2.26 lead at half-time.

The Buffaloes could taste a breakthrough triumph as they kicked four goals to one in the third term, which featured no behinds.

The Rattlers however finished stronger, as they landed four goals and one behind in the final quarter while Beenleigh managed only two behinds.

Josh Fuller and Paul Macknamara finished with two goals each for Brisbane Valley, while Cameron Letts and Mathew Dickenson did likewise for Beenleigh.

Rattlers quintet Tyler Austin, Zane Connolly, Harrison Sippel, Dugald Strachan and Matthew Carr kicked a goal each, as did Buffaloes quartet Matthew Locke, Dylan Kramer, Declan Sallis and Ty Ware.

This Friday night, the Rattlers play their final game of the year as they host the sixth-placed Coomera at Fernvale Sports Park.
