FREE Farmer Succession Planning

SUCCESSION planning for Australian farmers is a complex process that requires careful consideration of several factors, which is why Somerset Regional Council is hosting free workshops on the topic next month.

Economic Development and Tourism Committee member Councillor Jason Wendt said the success of any farm business relies on the continuity of operations.

“Proper succession planning ensures that the business can continue to thrive even after the current generation retires or passes away. There’s a great deal to be considered and having an understanding of the different elements of succession planning is a good starting place for primary producers,” Cr Wendt said.

“That’s why Council is hosting workshops that offer information on the practical, legal and financial aspects of succession planning for famers in our region,” Cr Wendt said.

Council has engaged Kylie Wilson to present the workshop on Farm Succession and Estate Planning for our primary producers in Kilcoy on September 5 and in Esk on September 6.

Kylie is partner at Sparke Helmore and is a highly regarded lawyer with experience in corporate, commercial, dispute resolution and litigation.

With expertise across agribusiness, structuring and asset protection, succession planning and estate administration and litigation, she specialises in family business dispute resolution and intergenerational wealth transition planning.

Well versed in working with medium to large family businesses, primary producers and industry groups in the grazing, dairy, horticulture and sugar cane industries, high net worth individuals and SMEs, Kylie will cover topics including transitioning the business to the next generation, structuring considerations for farming operations, and legal and financial aspects of succession planning in these workshops.

The workshops will be held at Kilcoy Visitor Information Centre from 5pm to 8pm on September  5 and at the Somerset Civic Centre in Esk from 9am to 12pm on September 6.

Each session will include a light lunch or dinner.
