The ‘Somerset Celebrates’ Australia Day 2024 is a free community event, which will kick off with an Australia Day Ceremony and Australia Day Community Awards ceremony (see below).

Conferees and nominated individuals, community groups and their guests will enjoy a catered morning tea, live music, Australian animal interaction and activities for the kids.

The Rotary Club of Karana Bellbowrie also received a grant to host a Citizenship Ceremony at the Moggill State School Hall from 11am on Australia Day, where 30 conferees will make the pledge to become Australian Citizens.

The funding is part of the Australian Government and National Australia Day Council (NADC) Australia Day 2024 Community Events Grants program. Successful hosts have received funding to deliver inclusive events that incorporate the message of ‘Reflect. Respect. Celebrate. We’re all part of the story’.

Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann encouraged residents in Ipswich, the Somerset Region and Karana Downs area to attend events in their local community.

“It was terrific to attend the Bellbowrie Community Australia Day event last year and I’m looking forward to participating in the ‘Somerset Celebrates’ Australia Day event this year.

“I encourage locals to come together this Australia Day and celebrate the day in their way,” Mr Neumann said.

NADC Chief Executive Mark Fraser AO CVO said the NADC provided additional funding for those groups that collaborated with local Indigenous communities to share First Nations stories, histories and perspectives, and celebrate their enduring culture.

“As Australians, we are connected by a shared desire for unity,” Mr Fraser said.

“Australia Day is a day to listen to each other, accept our history and show understanding and respect for those around us.”
