More than $2,000 was raised for Kilcoy Cancer Support Group at the inaugural Australian Defence Force (ADF) Veterans Golf Day at the Kilcoy Golf Club on Wednesday, August 16.

The Big Hitters team comprising Troy Edwards, Todd Edwards, Peggy McMillan and Steve Hunter won the morning session at last week’s inaugural ADF Veterans Golf Day in Kilcoy.
The Big Hitters team comprising Troy Edwards, Todd Edwards, Peggy McMillan and Steve Hunter won the morning session at last week’s inaugural ADF Veterans Golf Day in Kilcoy.

There were 40 golfers in the morning session and 44 in the afternoon session for the 4-ball Ambrose as participants came from Kilcoy, Woodford, Beerwah, Bribie Island, Cashmere, Glasshouse, the Sunshine Coast and the Enoggera-based Gallipoli Barracks.

There was also a visitor from Sydney, as well as a contingent from the NSW town of Tenterfield.

One of the event organisers, ‘Blue’ Reidy from the Kilcoy RSL sub-branch, said the weather on the day was perfect for golf while the course was in great nick.

‘Blue’ said the first-time event was organised to support Kilcoy Cancer Support Group, with the group run by volunteers and having many elderly people requiring assistance with transport for medical appointments.

Two Kilcoy-based teams were the winners, with the ‘Big Hitters’ line-up comprising Troy Edwards, Todd Edwards, Steve Hunter and Peggy McMillan winning the morning session with a score of 57 points.

‘Richmond Supporters Not By Choice’ subsequently won the afternoon session with 50 points, as this team featured Scott Bell, Steve Bichel, Craig Hine and Alan Kropp.

Each of the 84 participants received a gift bag which included a program titled ‘Spanner in the works’; an initiative from the Australian Men’s Shed focusing on body mechanics.

Raffles prizes included wheelbarrows, food hampers, vouchers and fire pits, courtesy of donations from the local community.

Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann, donated a hamper and presented some information on the Department of Veterans’ Affairs programs, and also checked out the flagpole which was installed with the help of a Federal Government Saluting Their Service commemorative grant.

‘Blue’ said the event would hopefully become an annual one, particularly after people from a number of businesses said they were keen to come on board for sponsorship next year.
