More than 130 people attended this inaugural event at the Wamuran Sports Complex Hall, on the night of Friday February 9.

People enjoyed eating, socialising, and watching the Wamuran Little Athletics Club in action.

Encouraged by the community response and feedback, the Wamuran Lions Club decided at a follow-up meeting to schedule community BBQs on the first Friday of each month.

This will somewhat resemble a former ritual in Wamuran, when monthly Friday dinners were held courtesy of the now-defunct Wamuran Sporting Association.

Wamuran Lions Club president Brian McAtee said this former ritual was the inspiration for the February 9 event.

The next community BBQ in Wamuran will be on March 1 – again from 5pm to 8pm – with a similar format to February 9, while the menu has a couple of extra items.

Mr McAtee said the atmosphere was “very casual and friendly, with heaps of smiles”.

“It was designed as a ‘meet your neighbour’, and so there was plenty of conversation and a meat tray and fruit and veggie tray raffle, thanks to Wamuran Butcher and Green Haven,” he said.

Mr McAtee said the event turned out “exactly how we wanted it to happen”, as the aim was to bring people together in a social setting and generate community spirit.

He also said it was great to see City of Moreton Bay Division 12 council candidates Tony Latter and Adrian Raedel attending and mingling with the crowd, assisting the club in different ways.

“It was good that State Member, Andrew Powell, also took time to acknowledge that the Lions are doing something very positive for the community of Wamuran,” Mr McAtee said.
