Kings Circle Newsagency was named Golden Casket Newsagent of the Year 2023, while other finalists came from Brisbane, Strathpine and North Lakes.

Therese Wolfenden and her daughter Jessika were at hand to receive the award, with the Caboolture-based newsagency run by the Wolfenden clan for nearly a decade: Bruce and Therese and their descendants Jessika, Carl and Angelique, and Jessika’s partner Michael.

Other major award categories were Employee of the Year, Convenience Store of the Year, and Newsagent of the Year.

In addition to Kings Circle Newsagency, two other Moreton Bay newsagents were among the statewide award winners. Allen Tan of Paperboxx North Lakes was named Newsagent of the Year, while Rod Hall and Brad Bateman of Friendly Grocer Strathpine were named Convenience Store of the Year.

The criteria for the Golden Casket Newsagent of the Year included customer service, the newsagent’s contribution for Golden Casket, what the newsagent “does as a newsagency”, and what the newsagent gave back to the community.

Jessika said one initiative which Kings Circle Newsagency took part in was Instant Scratch-Its seasonal gifting.

Asked how it felt for Kings Circle Newsagency to win the award, Jessika said “it took a while to sink in”.

“When you see the other agencies you’re up against, you don’t think you’re much of a chance,” she said.

“It’s definitely an honour to win the award.”

Jessika said the industry and the customers were the most enjoyable aspects of running the newsagency, while the family dynamic was among the highlights of working in the business.

“The majority of our customers are regulars,” she said.

“We know what they want, whether it’s lotto tickets or newspapers.

“We appreciate their loyalty and support.”
