Celebrate International Day of People with Disability
CLIENTS at Carinity Our House in Toogoolawah will celebrate International Day of People with Disability today (Friday).
The day is a global celebration of the achievements and contributions of people living with disability.
Supporting people with disability and ensuring they feel connected and included in their local community is what Carinity Our House in Toogoolawah is all about.
Carinity Our House Client Services Coordinator, Maggie Poole, said social inclusion was paramount to making people feel a part of the community where they live.
“Carinity Our House gives our people their own life outside of home and family,” Maggie said.
“This gives them a sense of individuality, purpose and pleasure while making new friends and creating new opportunities.”
Carinity Our House provides social activities, short-term on-site accommodation, in-home support and personal care, and assisting with volunteering and teaching life skills.
Shane Smith of Toogoolawah has been a Carinity Our House client for almost a decade.
The confidence and skills Shane has developed has helped create opportunities such as a volunteering role at the Gatton Transport Museum, and obtaining his learner’s licence to drive trucks.
Completing life-skills courses also empowered Shane to form a catering group, dubbed the Lunch ‘n’ Kings, which published their own cookbook.
“Our House has supported me to learn everyday life skills which has assisted me with my independence,” Shane said.
“I have also learned social skills. I’ve come a long way with my confidence over the years.”
Carinity Our House supports people living with disability in Toogoolawah, Esk, Kilcoy, Gatton, Laidley, Walloon and Redcliffe.
“I’ve had such joy watching a group of people who were isolated and vulnerable grow into confident happy people who have formed long-lasting friendships with each other,” Maggie said.
“That wouldn’t have happened without Our House.”
