Driver charged over moped deaths

POLICE have charged a 38-year-old Palmwoods man in relation to the deaths of a moped rider and his passenger in Morayfield on Friday.

Police will allege at about 9pm, two men were riding a Yamaha CY50 along Caboolture River Road towards Morayfield Road when they were struck from behind by a vehicle.

It will further be alleged the vehicle then left the scene through the intersection with Morayfield Road while the moped crashed into another vehicle.

The pillion passenger of the moped, a 32-year-old Caboolture South man, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The rider, a 30-year-old Caboolture South man, was transported to hospital for treatment where he died as a result of his injuries, Saturday night.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Branch have charged a 38-year-old Palmwoods man with two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death while affected by an intoxicating substance, and two counts of callous disregard for an injured person.

He was denied police bail and remanded in custody to appear in the Caboolture Magistrates Court today (Monday).
