TWENTY-FIVE cadets from throughout Queensland and aged between 15 and 18 years recently spent a day with the Villeneuve Rural Fire Brigade at Mount Archer as part of ESCape Week.

Two of the cadets were from Surf Living Saving Queensland, another two were from the Rural Fire Service (RFS) while the remaining 21 were Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) Emergency Services Cadets (ESC).

PCYC program manager Storm Richter said that there were 23 ESC units statewide, with several in south-east Queensland, Central Queensland and North Queensland.

Bushfire mitigation, understanding resources and tactical guides were among the happenings at Mount Archer.

“All cadets enjoyed the Rural Fire Service skill sets required to assist with these operations,” Mr Richter said.

A post on the QFES facebook page noted that the cadets “learnt to roll, bowl and use hoses and had a look over the trucks — drills and skills that are essential in fighting bushfires. We hope we’ve inspired the next generation of Rural Fire Service volunteers!”

Other days of ESCape Week included Volunteer Marine Rescue at Bribie Island, the Queensland Police Service Academy at Oxley, and Surf Living Saving at Coochiemudlo Island.

As for what’s next for the cadets, Mr Richter referred to the PCYC Cadet Games in Brisbane on June 19.

“Cadets from the Australian Defence Force, Rural Fire Service, Surf Life Saving and our very own Emergency Services Cadets participate in a one-day Cadet Games demanding excellence in skill, teamwork, leadership and camaraderie,” Mr Richter said.

On another note, Mr Richter remarked: “We are always looking for more adult leader volunteers to join the ESC family to assist and support the next generation of emergency personnel.”
