Last chance to view art exhibition in Woodford
THIS Friday and Saturday (November 26-27) will be the last chance to view the Woodford Community Art Group (WCAG) members’ exhibition at the Woodford Community Museum and Arts Centre.
The exhibition has been on display since the opening of the event on October 8.
Thirty-nine prizes were handed out, with Ellen Adriaansen winning the Champion trophy while Carol Robinson was Reserve Champion.
Ellen moved to the area with her husband more than 10 years ago, following a four-year overseas stint.
“The decision was made that my husband would continue to work in a formal environment while I would look after our property,” Ellen said.
“To ensure I had some contact with people, I actively sought to meet my neighbours and joined some volunteer groups.
“Nearly everyone I associated with was the age of my parents, in their mid 60s and now mid 70s.”
Ellen said over this time, a lot of the women commented that they felt “invisible”.
“Earlier in 2021, I was driving one particular friend in that age group to a meeting, and during the course of the journey there and back, the word ‘invisible’ was mentioned as well as the production of a couple of photos of her in her 20s and 30s,” Ellen said.
“She was stunning...someone that everyone would have noticed.
“That was the moment I decided to paint a series of portraits of local women in their 70s but the portrait would be of them from an earlier time.
“The greatest challenge has been to create a portrait in colour when the only reference I have is often of poor quality, and black and white.
“Also, unlike today, people didn’t have hundreds of photos of themselves, as a photo was an expensive resource.”
Three are on display at the exhibition, which is open from 10am to 2pm this Friday and Saturday.
