Fire investigators have since spent time examining the blaze.

The news sent shockwaves through the town, while a huge amount of support for the cafe was evident as more than 200 comments were posted on the Red Deer Cafe Facebook page.

More than 200 comments were also posted on the River 94.9 Facebook page after the radio station also provided a Facebook post about the sad news.

Those making the comments on social media shared their grief as they expressed a mix of devastation, commiserations and sorrow, making it clear that the cafe would be sorely missed.

One of the cafe’s owners said on Facebook that they were “lost for words” and that “devastated isn’t even a strong enough word for how we feel”.

“At this point in time we are unsure about future plans...I hope we can rebuild, but if we can’t where we were, there isn’t another option in Esk that is suitable, so we do feel very lost right now.

“On the bright side, our mighty pirate ship playground stayed unharmed and so did our two deers Hashstag and Belvedeer.”
