Meals on Wheels service enhanced in Woodford
MEALS on Wheels Moreton Bay Region (MOWMBR) will begin utilising a distribution centre in Woodford from December 5, following an array of discussions and initiatives in recent months.
The distribution centre will feature a two-door fridge at the Woodford Lions Den, after the Woodford Lions Club entered a joint partnership with MOWMBR.
With about 10 MOWMBR clients in Woodford, MOWMBR general manager Wendy Smith said more clients and volunteers in Woodford would be welcome.
Woodford Lions president David Kearns said the Lions club was “very proud and pleased to partner with MOW, to be able to deliver great value nutritional meals to the community using our Den as the coordination hub”.
“We are looking for more volunteers who can help once a month be drivers or helpers in order to provide this service,” he said.
Deliveries will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The push to have a distribution centre in Woodford resulted from an increase in demand in the region, particularly during the Covid pandemic when many people could not leave their homes.
MOWMBR resulted from the amalgamation of Pine Rivers, Samford, Burpengary and Bribie Island MOW services, with distribution centres at Petrie and Caboolture.
The amalgamation took place to make the MOW services more sustainable, and to support the volunteer-driven service.
Wendy said clients didn’t need a referral, while subsidised meals were available for clients on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and Home Care Package (HCP).
A mix of fresh, frozen and hot meals are available as meals include breakfast packs, sandwiches, salads and soup.
