Meteorites win inaugural Caboolture floorball title
METEORITES were crowned winners of the Caboolture floorball competition, having won the grand final 7-5 against Rockets on December 8.
It was the first time the Caboolture Fireballs Floorball Club ran a season-long competition, which featured eight weeks of round-robin competition and a finals series.
Players ranged from six to 15 years of age, and each team had mixed age groups while all games were played at the Caboolture Indoor Sports Centre.
Meteorites finished on top of the ladder and were followed by Rockets, Comets and Asteroids. The closeness of the four-team competition was evident as the first and last teams had a drawn contest during the season.
In the semi-final week, Comets upset Meteorites 4-1 while Rockets edged out Asteroids 2-1.
The following week, Asteroids beat Comets 3-1 in the play-off for third place, while Meteorites won the premiership decider.
Comets player Thomas Perrin was named players’ player for the season, while his teammate Harry Thompson had the most assists.
The highest goal scorer was Xavier Seaby of Rockets, while the coach’s player award went to Jacob Ross of Asteroids.
Competition organisers Kevin and Clare Tart founded the club in Caboolture in April last year after moving to the region. After their two sons had played floorball in the NSW Central Coast area, they didn’t have a club to play for, upon moving to Caboolture.
Floorball was invented in Sweden in the late 1960s but still only has a small number of clubs in Australia.
With five players plus a goalkeeper in each team, Clare said the sport was fast and high-placed, and included elements of ice hockey and indoor hockey, while plastic sticks and a plastic ball were used.
Kevin said the first season-long competition in Caboolture gave all players the option to try out different positions, including all team members having to play at least one game in goal.
“We saw a great improvement in team playing and a great improvement of passing and shooting skills,” he said.
“We also nominated four captains for the season which brought them exposure to leading and managing teams.”
The next Caboolture floorball season starts on February 2.
