Short cricket decider not long enough for Burpengary

BURPENGARY finished runner-up to Cooroy-Eumundi in Sunshine Coast Division 3 cricket as the grand final had an early finish last Saturday.

Burpengary’s Marley Helliwell conceded just eight runs in his 10 overs in the grand final, which was called off early.
Burpengary’s Marley Helliwell conceded just eight runs in his 10 overs in the grand final, which was called off early.

With no play possible on the first two days at Cooroy Sportsground due to wet conditions, second-placed Burpengary was left with one day to secure a first innings result for grand final glory.

It wasn’t to be, as Cooroy-Eumundi batted for 69 overs and reached 3/90 when the game was called off, as the hosts intended to deny the visitors a chance to bat.

Burpengary captain Ollie Curley said he chose to bowl after winning the toss because he thought this gave his team the best chance of forcing a result.

“The pitch was pretty much a road,” he said.

“Our bowlers got a bit of movement early, but it dried out and flattened out.

“There was no real scoreboard pressure for them.”

Curley said Noah Bell bowled exceptionally well, with Bell taking 3/16 from 18 overs.

Although disappointed with the way the season finished for his team, Curley did not look for excuses, saying it’s “just the way it is unfortunately”.

“We’ve just got to accept it. There’s not much we can do about it,” he said.

Curley said Cooroy-Eumundi “played awesome” throughout the season and deserved to win the premiership, although the number of washed out fixtures made things extremely hard for Curley’s team.

“I think the boys did really really well to get to second (place on the ladder) with all the washouts,” he said.

Curley said he looked forward to next season, and would be ‘looking for redemption’ when Burpengary plays Cooroy-Eumundi.
