Snakes ready for Rockhampton trip
THE Caboolture Snakes rugby union A graders are ready to trek to Rockhampton for a trial match against Brothers Rockhampton on Saturday, February 26.
Snakes coach Billy Holland said 23 players should make the trip with some B graders likely to be in the mix, depending on player availability.
The Snakes and Brothers teams will vie for the Luke Howard Memorial Cup, with the Snakes looking to retain the cup after winning it last year.
The Snakes have been starved of victories in the past few years, but Holland was hopeful of improvement as this year’s squad includes some recruits from other competitions.
“Pre-season’s always hard to get a good gauge, but numbers have been good (at training),” he said.
Holland said the Snakes would implement a new game plan and patterns, and see how it worked in the trial.
“It will be a chance for new players to show what they can do,” he said.
“It’s always exciting to see how the new players go.
“Because it’s a trial, you don’t focus so much on the result.
“(It’s about) putting the training into practice and seeing how that goes.”
Previously the Caboolture and Rockhampton clubs travelled to Bundaberg to play their annual trial, with the trophy on offer named after the late Luke Howard who had played for both clubs.
Snakes general manager John Flew said the Caboolture personnel chose to trek all the way to Rockhampton this year instead of meeting halfway as usual, so that the players could have “more of an away trip” and a bonding time.
