Somerset SES recognised for outstanding service
THE Somerset State Emergency Service (SES) unit and its volunteers have been recognised for their passion, hard work and commitment to serving the community as part of SES Week Celebrations across Queensland.
On Saturday, 3 September, several members of the Somerset SES unit were awarded Meritorious Service Medals recognising various years of service including 15, 25 and 35 years.
Lowood SES Group Leader, Daniel Giddins, and previous Lowood SES Group Leader, Carol Conboy, received Regional SES Week awards for distinguished service.
Training officer, Penny Butler, received the Noel Scott Memorial training award and the Somerset SES Unit was recognised as Regional SES Unit of the Year.
A memorial plaque for Lowood SES member, Merryl Dray, who passed away in the line of duty, during the February 2022 flood, was also unveiled.
Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann thanked all volunteers of the Somerset SES for their dedication, hard work and commitment to supporting their community.
“It’s been a challenging year for Somerset SES volunteers with two declared flood events in our region and the tragic loss of their colleague and friend, Merryl Dray,” Cr Lehmann said.
“Our SES volunteers continue to support and provide assistance to our community when they need it most and for that we are so appreciative and thankful for their efforts.
“It’s great to see their efforts recognised and on behalf of council I thank each and every volunteer for their contribution.”
SES volunteers perform a diverse range of functions during floods, storms and other emergencies.
