The triumph enabled the Wolves to win the Doug Drew Memorial Shield, named after Doug Drew who was a legendary figure for the Stanley River and Bribie Island clubs, after playing for the Norths Devils.

The annual memorial game began after the passing of Doug Drew in 2017, with Bribie Island winning the Shield each year until Stanley River clinched it for the first time last Saturday.

Doug Drew’s former premiership-winning teammates Rex Klein and Dave Donkin presented the Wolves with their jerseys for the game.

Following their season-opening 42-4 win over Caboolture, Stanley River missed a number of players and team staff for round two due to Covid and a change in game time. The Wolves still rallied and managed to field a full side for the away game.

In greasy conditions, the visitors looked lethargic in the first half and were down 6-0 at half-time following a converted try to Warrigals replacement Tevita Vailea.

As a group, the Wolves addressed the problems during the interval and then went on to score five tries without reply.

Stanley River led 8-6 following two tries to winger Nathan ‘Mambut’ Saliamungo before Trae Storr, Rowan Klein and Dean Lude scored a try each.

Josh Woodham converted the last three tries.

Storr, Sam ‘Carrot’ Armitage and James Cochran were rated the top three players for the victors.
