Woodford breaks long drought in pennants golf
THE Woodford 1 team (pictured) took out this year’s Glass House district senior pennant flag in men’s golf, having won the competition featuring two Woodford teams, Beerwah, Bribie Island, Caboolture, Maleny, Pine Rivers and Wantima.
With each team having eight players while the format was handicap match play, Woodford 1 defeated Wantima 5-3 in the final at the Woodford golf course on Monday, July 18.
It was a long time between drinks for Woodford which had not won a senior pennant flag since 1999.
Captain of the winning team, Ken Sullivan, said it was “a bit of an emotional day” when Woodford 1 clinched the win.
“It’s been a long time,” he said.
One of the highlights was Malcolm Bell shooting a one under par on the back nine to come back from two down, to secure a victory on the 17th hole.
Ken said all 10 players in his squad made worthy contributions, and that the squad gelled quite well.
With each club having a turn at hosting a round, Ken said it was good that each team had home ground advantage, although some rounds were postponed due to wet weather while the round at Beerwah was cancelled.
Ken said there was plenty of inter-town rivalry, with Wantima and Bribie Island having been the gun teams for many years, but that there was a good mix of competition and the social side.
“Everyone gets on well with everyone,” he said.
“It’s a camaraderie between the clubs in the district.
“You get to know a lot of them over the years.”
