St. Columban’s shines in netball
SAINT Columban’s College has maintained its strong record in interschool netball with teams achieving numerous high placings and champion school in one competition.
The Caboolture-based school had 11 teams and 110 players taking part in Saturday competitions, with the Firsts team taking part in the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball (QISSN) and Vicky Wilson Cup competitions.
The St. Columban’s Firsts team earned the title of champion school in the The Associated Schools (TAS) competition for the sixth time in seven years.
Opponents came from St. John’s (Forest Lake), West Moreton Anglican College (Karrabin), John Paul College (Daisy Hill), Canterbury College (Waterford), Cannon Hill Anglican College, St Paul’s (Bald Hills), and Ormiston College.
St. Columban’s also finished in the top four in the TAS competition in the other age groups, and were runners-up in the 9s, 10s and open age events.
The Caboolture-based school’s Firsts team came eighth out of 60 Catholic, Anglican and independent private schools in the QISSN competition, and 14th at the State finals of all Queensland schools.
St. Columban’s College assistant principal Julie Atkins said the champion Firsts team showed great promise for next year.
“(We’ve become) champion school in TAS despite huge monetary investment by other schools into their netball programs, (which) shows great depth and consistency in our program,” she said.
Ms Atkins noted that three St. Columban’s players from the past two years – Poppy Gatfield, Bayley Woollett and Sarah Harris – have progressed to state teams and Sunshine Coast Lightning feeder teams.
Ms Atkins said St. Columban’s also took part in an umpiring program alongside its playing teams, with wonderful support and partnerships from the Caboolture Netball Association.
