Star-struck at Stonehouse
Fifty-two people attended the first ever Stonehouse Under the Stars event (pictured) at the Moore-based Stonehouse on Saturday, May 6.
Music, a feast, and bush poetry were among the activities in addition to gazing skywards.
The event was postponed from March due to weather factors, with Stonehouse co-owner John Eastwood saying the rescheduled date coincided with the Williams family – who built the Stonehouse – landing in the Moreton Bay area 150 years ago.
“They would have seen the Australian stars for the first time,” John said.
Everyone who purchased a ticket for Stonehouse Under the Stars made an appearance, after the tickets sold out within seven days of when they were first available.
Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann and his wife attended, as did Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke and her husband.
Cr Lehmann opened proceedings with a Welcome to Country, and he also gave a short speech.
Local singers Katie and Connie Sempf – both descendants of the Williams family – engaged everyone’s attention with their music and singing.
Paul (aka ‘Schilfy’) cooked a meal which was thoroughly enjoyed by all, as the dish comprised roast pig on spit, roast chicken and vegetables.
Dessert was supplied by Linda Howe, Claire Kenrick, Angela Cook and Loretta Eastwood.
Bush poets Peter Fraser, Mick Martin and local identity Eddie Budgeran recited a number of poems as the attendees sat around the open fire pits.
John later said he “found it amazing how the audience fell silent” as the gathering listened to the bush poets.
“These beautiful old buildings were an amazing back drop, lit up by the open fire pits and full moon for the entertainment,” he said.
John said it was a great night with great weather, great entertainment and great company.
“We truly thank everyone for coming out here and supporting the event,” he said.
John also thanked everyone who contributed towards the event, including the volunteers.
“We look forward to our next Stonehouse Under the Stars event,” he said.
The next event at the Stonehouse site will be the Heritage Open Day Weekend on July 22 and 23.
