Stonehouse to host open days
THE Stonehouse buildings along the D’Aguilar Highway at Moore will once again be available for public viewing on a weekend, as open days take place on July 23 and 24.
In its third year, the annual open day event promotes awareness of Stonehouse buildings and allows the public to learn the historical value of them.
One of the event organisers, John Eastwood, said Stonehouse was built in 1874 as a horse changing point for the Stagecoach that ran between Esk and Nanango, by members of the Williams Family.
Mr Eastwood said it was built on the original stock route/ Droving trail, and was heritage listed in 2002.
“Stonehouse was an important part in the Brisbane Valley’s history, mentioned in the Old Drovers Song ‘Ladies of Brisbane’ and in many a legend of the Brisbane Valley and South Burnett,” he said.
“Unfortunately over the years these buildings were allowed to slowly deteriorate into ruins.
“We are hoping to create awareness of Stonehouse’s historical significance and gain support for these buildings to be rebuilt to their former glory before it is too late.”
Mr Eastwood said the unique historical landmark was the only one of its kind in Queensland, and was “right here in our backyard”.
“To walk around these old buildings and soak up the atmosphere is in itself amazing,” he said.
“To imagine the Stagecoach pulling up in a cloud of dust with passengers from times gone by or the old drovers moving massive herds of cattle stopping for the night on their way to Brisbane.”
There will be live music from local performers, while there will also be food and drinks, historical displays and other information.
As event organisers introduce something new each year, a new feature this time will be a Bush Poets Breakfast on the Sunday in honour of Banjo Paterson.
Access to the Stonehouse buildings for open day is by bus only, featuring a five-minute trip from the Stone Rotunda in Moore.
The bus pick up point is opposite the shops near the tennis courts.
The event runs from 8.30am to 3.30pm, with the bus shuttle leaving at 20-30 minute intervals.
Cost is $10 per adult, including bus transfer and entry.
