Thursday and Sunday races a hit in Kilcoy
THE Kilcoy Race Club Winter Carnival’s two-day meeting comprising Thunder-in Thursday and the Sensational Sunday races was a great success for the club, according to club chairperson Con Searle.
Mr Searle said it showed the “magnificent improvement” in the track condition, following the planning and progression the club had dedicated to upgrading the racing surface to one of the best Tier 2 tracks in Queensland.
“The running of 18 races over the three days (eight last Thursday and 10 last Sunday) proved the stamina of the track,” he said.
“It’s a credit to our track person Mark Williams and his team for the outstanding condition.”
Mr Searle said the number of nominations and acceptances for the race days exceeded all expectations, with the popularity for Kilcoy racing continuing to grow.
“It is also noted in crowd attendance to see the number of patrons on Thursday, maybe due to school holidays, but a lot of patrons told us it was their first time here and they will be back,” he said.
“One group of 12 who had travelled from different parts of Queensland stayed in Kilcoy for the night after the races.”
Mr Searle said some of the Sunday races were named after studs and persons who had contributed to the club with free services to their stallions in an effort to support the club and racing.
‘Thank you’ races were named in recognition of the Frappell family, Shane ‘Bear’ Chataway, Nolan family, Peter Boyce and Greg Decker.
Boyce (Medal of the Order of Australia) was a long-time sponsor and supporter of Kilcoy and Sunshine Coast Turf Club and racing, and Decker (who also had a Medal of the Order of Australia) was a Kilcoy Digger.
