Up and down start for Caboolture cricket
CABOOLTURE’S senior cricketers had a loss and a win as the club hosted four games in the first two rounds of the Sunshine Coast Division 1 T20 competition last Saturday.
The home side lost to Maroochydore by four wickets before trouncing Coolum by eight wickets.
Sent in to bat in the first match, Caboolture made a modest total of 101 for the loss of nine wickets in its 20 overs.
Five of the top six batters made double figures but Cameron Trask (22) was the only one to score more than 14.
Maroochydore’s Matthew Jackson claimed splendid figures of 4/12 from four overs, while Reid Anderson was the next best with 2/12.
The visiting team lost an early wicket, before a double strike from Mitchell Lee left Maroochydore nervously placed at 3/31.
Callum Stitt found support from Luke McInnes, with a 44-run stand taking the team to within sight of victory before three wickets fell for 15 runs.
McInnes was not to be denied as his 32 not out helped the visitors pass the target with 13 balls to spare.
Preston White was Caboolture’s best bowler with 2/15.
While this game was in progress, Caloundra was dismissed for 73 on the neighbouring field before Coolum sneaked to a two-wicket victory.
Having made a match-winning 43 not out from 40 balls in that low-scoring game, Coolum opener Brendan Kelly followed up with 50 from 46 balls in the afternoon match against Caboolture.
Kelly’s first knock included one four and three sixes, before his half-century featured five fours and two sixes.
Kelly’s dismissal left Coolum 3/74, and Ryan Briggs (25 not out) was the only other Coolum batter to make any impression as the team made 6/105, with five Caboolture bowlers sharing the wickets while Lee again captured two.
The hosts fell from 0/16 to 2/17 as the openers departed, but there were no further hiccups as Caboolture raced to the target with 22 balls remaining.
Glen Batticciotto struck six boundaries in his unbeaten 45 from 37 deliveries, while Trask found the boundary three times in his 41 off as many balls.
In the other afternoon match on Caboolture turf, Caloundra was restricted to 7/85 before Maroochydore struggled to a two-wicket win.
Caboolture will contest Nambour and Gympie this Saturday at the Caloundra-based Roy Henzell Park.
