Upgraded emergency department opens at Redcliffe Hospital
REDCLIFFE Hospital will provide safer and better emergency care for children and families with its new dedicated paediatric ED opening tomorrow.
The $10 million upgrade, funded by the Australian Government, will provide the hospital’s emergency department with a paediatric section for the first time.
The new paediatric facilities include a separate waiting area, triage, and treatment spaces specifically designed for children and families.
The upgrade will also deliver 12 more treatment spaces in the emergency department, including a mental health lounge for low-acuity mental health patients needing emergency care.
Additional nursing and medical staff will support the new facilities.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the state government is proud to be working alongside the Federal Government to deliver for Queensland families.
“These new treatment spaces will make a big difference to our smallest patients while supporting our hardworking health heroes.
“This year’s record health budget will see more facilities just like this one delivered in hospitals around the state, to deliver the services Queensland families rely on.”
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Ambulance Services Shannon Fentiman said the upgrade to Redcliffe Hospital’s emergency department will mean that our littlest members of the community have paediatric specific care.
“One in five ED presentations at Redcliffe Hospital are children, meaning there is no better time to invest in dedicated spaces for kids and families in this growing community.
“The upgrade opens at the perfect time, with the Palaszczuk Government’s $1.1 billion Redcliffe Expansion set to deliver 204 new beds to Redcliffe Hospital.”
Attorney-General and Member for Redcliffe, Yvette D’Ath, said the new paediatric section includes practical features for families, like charging points for mobile devices, and even an interactive ceiling-mounted projector that helps distract and entertain children.
“This upgrade is the latest in a long line of improvements and new facilities at Redcliffe Hospital that reflect the growth of our region and changing demographic needs of the Peninsula community.”
Redcliffe Hospital Emergency Department Director, Dr Alan Yan, said around 20 per cent of emergency department presentations at Redcliffe Hospital are babies and children, equating to more than 1,000 paediatric cases each month.
“We’re excited about caring for them in this new separate section because we know it will provide better care and a better experience for parents, caregivers and families.
“Providing 12 extra treatment spaces in the ED and a suitable area for people suffering mental health issues, will make a real difference.
