The soccer field at the Lowood Recreational Complex was deliberately destroyed on Tuesday, 16 April.

In the early hours of Tuesday, 16 April a vehicle has entered the facility off Lindemans Road at Lowood and destroyed the turf and playing field by completing several burnouts.

Somerset Regional Council Mayor Jason Wendt described the action as “senseless”.

“We do not tolerate, and nor should we, this type of destructive behaviour in our towns,” Cr Wendt said.

“Council, together with various community groups, works extremely hard to provide these facilities for the enjoyment of our community.

“To have this field destroyed at the start of the soccer season is devastating.”

Cr Wendt said the field is predominately used by children aged six to eight to learn, train and play.

“Various clubs maintain these council facilities and work tirelessly to prepare the fields for the safe and enjoyable use of others. They too are devastated,” he said.

“Council will work with the Lowood Recreational Complex Association to review the damage and determine the damage bill. What we do know is the damage will require significant works and investment to repair.

“Fortunately, council recently installed additional cameras at the site and we have footage of the offending vehicle in action.”

Cr Wendt encouraged anyone in the community who may have seen any suspicious behaviour between the hours of 3am and 4am on Tuesday, 16 April to contact police.

“We need to work together to send a clear message that our community will not tolerate this, or any type, of anti-social behaviour,” he said.
