Waste changes on the way for Somerset region
SOMERSET Regional Council is introducing a uniform waste and recycling service across the region this financial year.
As part of the changes, all Somerset residents who receive a kerbside waste collection service will have a recycling bin and a 240-litre general waste bin.
Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the changes were significant for the region.
“This is a new era for waste management in Somerset with the introduction of kerbside recycling services to all households who receive a kerbside waste collection service,” Cr Lehmann said.
“Residents in the former Esk Shire Council area have been asking for a recycling bin for a long time now and I’m pleased that our council can now deliver this important service and help reduce waste going to landfill.
“Some residents have already received their new recycling bins with services set to start next month.”
Cr Lehmann said the changes were a step in the right direction.
“Local government plays an integral role in the delivery of waste and recycling services, especially to households, and together we can improve how waste is managed,” he said.
Somerset Council appointed Ipswich City Council, trading as Ipswich Waste Services, the waste contract for the region following an exhaustive competitive process which was overseen by independent consultants, Peak Services.
The contract is for collections, bin deliveries and repairs, as well as removing materials from transfer stations.
“Council is delighted to be working with our neighbours, Ipswich City Council, to deliver this important service to our residents,” Cr Lehmann said.
In addition to the changes, Council has introduced a free app, Somerset Bin App, that residents are encouraged to download onto their smart device.
“This app tells residents what day/s their bins will be collected, service disruptions and more,” Cr Lehmann said.
“Residents can also visit council’s website and print a PDF calendar of all their bin collection days listed, specific to their address.”
