The works are scheduled to start on Monday (April 24) and take up to two weeks to complete, depending on the weather and site conditions.

Downer WSP and its subcontractors will carry out the project, which will include the removal of the water tank, guardrail, and pipework.

“The water tower is over 50 years old and supported the supply of water to residents in the area for many years,” Urban Utilities said in a statement.

“It was decommissioned in 2004 when the new booster pump was installed to improve enhance water supply to the local community.”

Barriers and signage around the work areas will be in place to keep people safe, while the works are expected to take place between 6am and 6pm on weekdays.

Some of the work may need to be carried out during the evening and on some Saturdays, with Urban Utilities saying people would be notified in advance.

There may be road, lane and footpath closures around the work site, with traffic management in place to look after the safety of pedestrians and road users.

Member for Nanango, Deb Frecklington, said she was very pleased that Urban Utilities had started the process of removing the unused water tower.

“This is a great result for the community members who identified the structure was not safe and called for it to be pulled down,” she said.

“I was happy to advocate on their behalf with Urban Utilities and together we have achieved a very positive outcome.

“I would also like to thank Urban Utilities for taking the community’s concerns on board and acting so promptly on this issue.”
